SAN DIEGO—San Diego police homicide detectives say a woman found fatally shot inside her office last July was killed by her daughter, who later committed suicide.
The victim was identified as 66-year-old Maria Kelly of Chula Vista. The victim’s deceased daughter has been identified as 34-year-old Crystal Vasquez of Chula Vista.
On July 22, just before 1:30 p.m., San Diego police communications center received a 9-1-1 call regarding a deceased person inside an office at 3443 Camino Del Rio South in San Diego.
Police officers found a Hispanic female deceased inside her office. Medical Examiner’s Office determined the woman sustained a single gunshot wound to her body and her death was the result of a homicide.
After hearing from family members that her mother was found deceased, the victim’s daughter drove to the location. Shortly after her arrival, the daughter used the restroom of a nearby business. When she failed to return, another family member found her inside the restroom with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to her body. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities say Vasquez discovered that video surveillance might have covered the entry and exit to her mother’s office. That’s when Vasquez went to use the restroom and shot herself.
Video surveillance showed that the Vasquez was inside the office with her mother at the time of the murder, according to San Diego police.
The investigation revealed that Vasquez shot her mother during the afternoon on July 20, and left her mother’s body in the utility room of her office. On July 21, she fraudulently cashed a check written from her mother’s banking account.
After learning video surveillance might have covered the entry and exit to her mother’s office, Vasquez went to use the restroom and shot herself, according to homicide investigators.
Forensic examination of the handgun showed that the gun used by the daughter to commit suicide was the same weapon to murder her mother.
