Supervisor Cox, Residents Open Cool Beach Library In Imperial Beach

IMPERIAL BEACH — County Supervisor Greg Cox, Imperial Beach Mayor Serge Dedina and area residents celebrated the opening of a new, coastal themed County library in Imperial Beach.

The library was designed with the community’s input and captures the small, beach town feel of Imperial Beach. It has a curved roof reminiscent of ocean waves, beach photos, a replica Woody beach station wagon for children to play in and other touches.

“This is a cool beach library for a cool beach town,” said Supervisor Greg Cox. “This library will quickly become the hub of the community — a safe haven for children to read and study, a place for adults to lose themselves in books and learn new skills and a gathering spot for community organizations to hold meetings.”

More than 300 people turned out for the opening of the library, which at approximately 14,800 square feet is nearly three times the size of the old facility.

The new library has an array of rooftop solar panels and energy efficiencies that make it a Net-Zero building, meaning that the building will generate renewable energy equal to its power consumption.  Other features include a considerably enlarged collection of materials, children and family area, private study rooms, wireless internet and a computer lab, Friends of the Library bookstore, and automated book check-in and check-out stations. Included in the design is also a large community room for events and public meetings.

“I have been an Imperial Beach Library card holder since 1971 and am grateful to the County of San Diego and Supervisor Greg Cox for making such an important investment in the quality of life for our community,” said Mayor Dedina. “This beautifully and sustainably designed library is the latest in a number of projects that are improving the quality of life in Imperial Beach.”

This is the 11th new County library built in the last 11 years.

“Libraries change lives and the Imperial Beach library will make a big difference for the people who use it every day,” said Library Director Migell Acosta.
