SPRING VALLEY–Firefighters battled an intense brush fire that broke out in a canyon and spread to a hillside in Spring Valley Wednesday afternoon.

Cal Fire said the Pointe Fire began just after 4 p.m. in the 2900 block of Pointe Parkway. The fast-moving fire prompted Sheriff’s deputies to evacuate homeowners in California Waters Drive, Pleasant Water Ct., Ledgeside between Ledge View and South Barcelona.

Authorities sent residents to a temporary evacuation site at Monte Vista High School on Sweetwater Springs Blvd.

Helicopters and air tankers were used to prevent the fire from spreading to homes in the Sweetwater area. By late Wednesday evening, the 26 acres fire was 60% contained, according to Cal Fire.

Authorities lifted evacuation orders, and residents were allowed back in the neighborhood.

A firefighter bitten by a rattlesnake was transported to a local hospital. He is expected to survive, Cal Fire reports.

No structures were damaged.
