CARLSBAD–A bicyclist was bitten by a pit bull dog as he rode to downtown Carlsbad, authorities said Sunday.

Just after 7:30 a.m., Carlsbad police officers responded to a call of a dog bite in the 3500 block of Roosevelt Street. The reporting party stated that he was riding his bicycle in the area and a pit bull chased him and bit him on the foot. Officers arrived at 7:38 a.m. and found the victim bleeding from a wound to his foot. Officers located and cornered the dog in the driveway of a home. They used an abundance of restraint when the animal charged at them. Officers called for animal control officers and initially used pepper spray to keep the animal cornered in the driveway. Officers were eventually forced to shoot the dog one time with a less lethal, bean bag round when it attempted to attack them. The dog received minor injuries. An officer with the Department of Animal Control arrived and took custody of the dog using a capture pole.
