CHULA VISTA–With the addition of a long-distance, 70.3-mile race option, organizers of the CVC San Diego Half Triathlon (also known as the Chula Vista Challenge) are planning the largest event yet for August 14 at Chula Vista’s Bayside Park.

Also new for 2016 are fully redesigned race routes, the creation of  spectator-friendly areas, and a live Mariachi-fueled Fiesta theme, complete with tacos, margaritas, and Sierra Nevada beer.

“As the only locally owned and operated half-distance triathlon in San Diego, we really want to shine,” said Carrie Panek, whose company, KOZ Events, is partnering with Pulse Endurance Sports to put on the 6-year-old event. She continued, “The redesigned courses are fantastic for athletes and for spectators alike. We’ve created a “hot lap” area where the run and the bike courses come right through the Expo venue. We’ve made the event super family-friendly with a Kids’ Fun Zone, kids’ races, and reasonable entry fees.”
Including the 70.3-mile swim-bike-run option, the schedule for the day has twelve unique events: an International-distance triathlon, a sprint-distance triathlon, relay versions of both, three Aquabike races, two duathlons, a Mini Tri for kids aged 11 and up, and an Itsy Bitsy Tri for kids aged 7 to 10. Complete registration details are available at www.chulavistachallenge.com.
The CVC San Diego Half Triathlon, which is officially sanctioned by USAT, is also part of the 2016 San Diego Tri Series, a points competition for finishers of five local races: The Spring Sprint Triathlon (May), San Diego International Triathlon (June), Solana Beach Triathlon (July), CVC San Diego Half Triathlon (August) and the XTERRA Wetsuits Mission Bay Triathlon (October).
Keeping with KOZ Events’ longstanding commitment to the Challenged Athletes Foundation, the CVC event beneficiary is CAF Operation Rebound, a program that helps change the lives of physically challenged athletes by giving them the opportunity to live an active lifestyle through physical fitness and competitive athletics.
KOZ Events encourages athletes to donate to, and fundraise for, the program, and offers free registration to the CVC San Diego Half Triathlon for anyone who raises $600 or more for CAF Operation Rebound. For more details, visit the event website, http://www.chulavistachallenge.com.
