SAN MARCOS–A pedestrian who was struck Thursday by a Sprinter train managed to walk away from the accident, transit authorities say.

Deputies from the San Marcos Sheriff’s Station and deputies from the Sheriff’s Transit Enforcement Unit responded just after 8:30 p.m. to a Sprinter train collision on the railroad tracks at Los Posas Road and West Mission Avenue, which is located just west of the Palomar College Transit Center in San Marcos.

A westbound Sprinter train was traveling at approximately 40 miles per hour when the engineer observed a pedestrian standing on the north side of the tracks at the pedestrian crossing. The Sprinter train immediately applied the horn with no response from the pedestrian, and then applied the emergency braking system, but the pedestrian did not move. The train was unable to stop and collided into the pedestrian. The pedestrian got up and walked eastbound, away from the collision scene. The pedestrian was searched for, but not located, following the collision. The pedestrian’s condition or whereabouts are unknown at this time.

The Sheriff’s Transit Enforcement Unit will be handling the investigation.  Anyone with information about this case can call the Sheriff’s Department’s non-emergency line at (858) 565-5200.
