EL CENTRO–Beginning August 1, bicyclists traveling on Interstate 8 (I-8) through Imperial County will have a new option to assist in completing their trips as major construction continues on the I-8 Update Project.
The shoulders of I-8 and segments of Evan Hewes Highway will be temporarily closed to bicyclists and a shuttle will be provided to carry cyclists in both directions. Touring cyclists are encouraged to use an alternate route such as State Route 78 to Blythe/Interstate 10 to Arizona.
Bicycling enthusiasts can plan ahead and call to schedule a shuttle pickup at four locations along I-8. The four pickup locations are: State Route 115, State Route 98, Ogilby Road and 4th Avenue in Winterhaven. The free shuttle service will operate from 7 a.m. to noon, seven days a week. Pickups can be scheduled by calling (760) 337-1759 at a minimum of one hour before.
Cyclists are encouraged to be safe and not enter construction zones.
“The safety of cyclists is a very high priority for Caltrans,” said Laurie Berman, District 11 Director, “This shuttle service will ensure they can complete their trips through the Imperial County during the construction.”
The I-8 Update is a multi-year project that will construct 48 miles of Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement and replace asphalt shoulders. The project, to be constructed in five segments, will provide a smoother ride and significantly extend the life expectancy of the roadway. Completion of the project is expected in 2019.
