SAN DIEGO–The musical Hair debuted in New York City in 1968 on the heels of the Summer of Love and changed theatre forever.
As the very first rock musical, it was a product of the hippie counterculture and sexual revolution of the 1960s. Several of its songs became anthems of the anti-Vietnam War peace movement. The musical caused much comment and controversy and became an instant phenomenon.Hair ran for four years in addition to spawning countless touring productions across the globe. It was revived in 2009 and won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical.
Now, this breakthrough musical is coming to Cygnet Theatre for two nights only.
Audiences can enjoy a groovy evening of fun and music, all while supporting Cygnet Theatre Artists. 60’s era costumes are encouraged!
With book and lyrics by James Rado and Gerome Ragni and music by Galt MacDermot, the musical broke new ground in musical theatre by defining the genre of “rock musical,” using a racially integrated cast, and inviting the audience onstage for a “Be-In” finale. Associate Director Rob Lutfy is excited about the opportunity to tackle the musical classic.
“The show is part of our history, as a nation and as a theatre community,” Lutfy says. “Its start off Broadway at the Public and its move to Broadway and beyond set the standard for shows today including Hamilton and others.”
Each year, Cygnet Theatre presents a staged reading of a musical as a fundraiser, and past productions include Evita, Follies and On the 20th Century, which will be coming to Cygnet’s MainStage as a full production in the spring. Additionally this summer, all donations made to Cygnet through August 31 will be doubled up to $25,000 thanks to an anonymous donor.
