CARLSBAD–Police arrested a man who physically assaulted his girlfriend and armed himself with a shotgun inside their residence

Carlsbad police identified the suspect as Gabriel Navarro of Carlsbad.

On Friday, Carlsbad police received a 911 call from a citizen regarding a domestic battery that just occurred at 7:30 p.m. in the 100 block of Juniper Avenue between Carlsbad Boulevard and Garfield Street. Police officers located the victim who had fled to a neighbor’s residence. Officers were advised by the victim that she sustained a laceration to her forehead when her boyfriend slammed her head onto the hardwood floor in their residence. The victim told officers that Navarro had armed himself with a shotgun and was still somewhere inside their residence.

Paramedics transported the victim to a local hospital where she was treated and released for her injuries.

Carlsbad Police SWAT Team and Crisis Negotiations Team made several attempts to contact Navarro with public address announcements and by telephone, however he did not respond. SWAT Officers searched the residence with the assistance of a Carlsbad police K9. The K9 located Navarro hiding in the attic of the residence.

Navarro was arrested and transported to the hospital prior to being booked into Vista Jail on domestic battery charges.
