SAN DIEGO–Authorities released the identity of a man found dead June 19 in Mission Valley, San Diego police said Tuesday.

The victim has been identified as 30-years-old Michael Bernard Nichols from Gary, Indiana.

On June 19, at 9:25 a.m., the San Diego Police Department Communications center received a 911 call of a male down and non-responsive. The male was lying on the sidewalk along the 1300 block of Hotel Circle South.

When officers and medics arrived on scene, they found an African American male approximately in his 30’s not breathing. The male was pronounced deceased by medics at the scene.  The cause of death was undetermined at that time but it appeared the victim suffered trauma to his upper torso. The San Diego Police Department Homicide Unit responded to the scene and is actively investigating the incident.

On June 20,  the Medical Examiner’s office performed an autopsy and determined the victim sustained a single stab wound to his upper torso.  The Medical Examiner’s office determined the cause of death as homicide.
