CARLSBAD–Carlsbad police retrieved a stolen truck without the driver from the lagoon early Wednesday morning, investigators say.

Investigators say the registered owner of the truck is an Oceanside resident. The owner reported that he left his keys inside the truck and that it was stolen last night from Oceanside.

On Wednesday, a police officer was flagged by a witness who reported a truck had gone off the hill and into the lagoon in the area of Carlsbad Boulevard and Sequoia Avenue.

Three officers went into the water to rescue anyone that might be inside the truck. Visibility did not allow them to see if anyone was inside. The officers left the water due to the vehicle’s instability and the water’s strong current conditions.

Carlsbad and Oceanside fire personnel, and California State Parks lifeguards responded to the scene to assist. Fire crews used flares to check along the hillside for a driver of the vehicle.

A lifeguard dive team entered the water to assist with the search and also found the vehicle’s instability and the water’s strong current conditions unsafe to continue.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
