LAKESIDE–Senior volunteers from the Lakeside Sheriff’s Substation came to the rescue of a woman enrolled in the Sheriff’s You Are Not Alone (YANA) program.

On April 20, Senior Volunteers Ernie Bonanno and David Lieras checked on the welfare of an 86‐year‐old YANA member in Lakeside. When they didn’t hear back from her, senior volunteers asked Corporal Jerold Ring and Deputy Thomas Bennett to respond. The deputies climbed through an open window and found the woman on the floor and in need of medical attention. It was later determined she had been there for three days and doctors said she would not have made it another day. She was treated for severe dehydration and now lives in a group home where she is receiving 24‐hour care.

YANA members countywide receive phone calls and weekly visits from Sheriff’s Senior Volunteers. May is Older Americans Month which celebrate seniors and their contributions to their communities and nation.

Senior or disabled people who live alone are encouraged to sign up for the Sheriff’s You Are Not Alone program at http://sdsheriff.net/documents/yana-brochure.pdf.
