DEL MAR–A pedestrian was struck Friday evening by a northbound Coaster train while walking onto the tracks in Del Mar.

Deputies from the Sheriff’s Transit Enforcement Unit say the collision occurred on the railroad tracks at milepost marker 244.4, which is located on the bluffs. The train was traveling at approximately 50 miles per hour when the engineer observed a pedestrian walking onto the tracks. The train was unable to stop and collided with the pedestrian.

The pedestrian suffered unknown injuries and was transported to the hospital.

The Sheriff’s Transit Enforcement Unit will be handling the investigation.

Since February 2, 2015 to April 15, 2016 there have been 18 train collisions on the railroad tracks in the San Diego County Sheriff’s jurisdiction.
