OCEANSIDE–A white adult male walking his dog placed an olive-colored metal container near the front right of a California Highway Patrol vehicle that was parked near the Oceanside DMV Friday morning.

The officer was on duty performing job-related duties inside the DMV when he was made aware of the object placed near his patrol vehicle. The officer located the container and immediately implemented safety measures to protect the area. DMV employees and customers were safely escorted to a safer location on the property shortly after the officer located the container.

The officer, currently assigned to the Oceanside CHP, described the container as an olive drab, metal canister, similar to those used by the military to transport ammunition.

As a precaution, a CHP K-9 unit and the Sheriff’s Department Explosive Ordinance Disposal unit arrived at the location to examine the container. After a thorough inspection of the container, authorities determined the contents inside were non-threatening.

The person who place the container was not located.
