SAN DIEGO–An estimated 108,000 gallons of sewage spilled Sunday morning in Tecolote Canyon adjacent to Mt. Ashmun Drive in San Diego when a landslide caused a force main sewer line to break.
The sewage reportedly entered Tecolote Creek and flowed through Tecolote Golf Course before entering east Mission Bay just north of the Fiesta Island land bridge. The spill was stopped at 6 p.m. the same day.
As a result, Tecolote Creek south of Mt. Ashmun Drive and east Mission Bay from the Fiesta Island land bridge north to the Visitors’ Center at Clairemont Drive have been closed to water contact. The closure also includes the eastern portion of Fiesta Island.
Water quality samples are being collected from Tecolote Creek and east Mission Bay to evaluate the extent of potential sewage impacts.
Signs warning of sewage contamination have been posted at various access points along Tecolote Creek and affected beaches in east Mission Bay and will remain in place until samples confirm that water is no longer impacted.
