OCEANSIDE–A man is in the hospital after he accidentally shot himself in the chest, Oceanside police said Monday.

Oceanside police dispatchers received a phone call at 6:41 a.m. from a resident in the 4100 block of Thomas Street. The caller told dispatch a neighbor had just exited his house across the street. The neighbor had a gunshot wound in the chest area.

When officers arrived, the victim told them he was removing his gun from his shoulder holster and it accidentally discharged, striking him in the chest. He was later transported to Tri City Medical Center and flown to Scripps Hospital.

Oceanside police are investigating the incident. There is no information on the identity of the victim.
