SAN DIEGO–A man suspected of fatally shooting  brother and sister was shot by police after a brief stand-off Thursday evening.

A police officer spotted 39 year-old Felipe DeJesus Vega driving his vehicle in the area of 1000 South 43rd Street. A vehicle stop was initiated but Vega fled. A vehicle pursuit ensued and Vega threw a handgun out of the window of his vehicle.

Vega pulled into an apartment complex in the 3500 block of Van Dyke Avenue and refused to exit his vehicle.

Police officers used negotiators, pepper spray and a police canine to persuade Vega to exit his vehicle.

The ordeal continued over two hours when Vega exited his vehicle  then reached for his waistband area while turning toward officers and negotiators. One police officer fired one round at Vega striking him in his upper torso. He was transported to a local hospital and is listed in stable condition.

On Monday, 20 year-old Arline Iribe and her brother, 22 year-old Alexis Velarde, were shot and killed behind a residence in the 1100 block of South 43rd Street. Vega was identified as the suspect in both of the murders.

The officer involved in this shooting is an 11-year veteran with the San Diego Police Department.
