North County–An oncoming train struck an unoccupied vehicle that landed on the railroad tracks Sunday evening on Interstate 5 Freeway, authorities said.
A driver of a vehicle traveling southbound on the Interstate 5 Freeway drove off the roadway and onto the railroad tracks approximately two miles north of Las Pulgas Road. The tracks run parallel to the freeway. The driver was uninjured and able to safely exit the vehicle,
Approximately five minutes later, a southbound Amtrak struck the vehicle. The train was traveling approximately 45 miles per hour. There were no injuries as a result of the collision.
The incident is under investigation.
