SAN DIEGO–Homicide detectives are investigating the death of a man who was detained after a vehicle stop on Sunday.

San Diego police officers responded to a call of an intoxicated driver at the USA Gas Station, located at 2205 Morena Boulevard in San Diego. Officers located the male driver at the gas pumps, seated in a white Chevrolet sedan with the engine running. The officers saw open alcoholic beverage containers in the front center console area.

While speaking with the driver, the officers smelled alcohol emitting from his breath and observed other symptoms of intoxication due to alcohol or drugs. The man was detained outside of his vehicle for questioning. About three minutes later, the man began to vomit and have trouble breathing. The officers provided first-aid and requested medics. The man was transported to Scripps La Jolla Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Homicide investigators were called to the scene and will be conducting a follow-up investigation.

An autopsy will be performed by the Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause of death.

The identity of the man is known, but will not be released until family notifications are made.
