OCEANSIDE–Oceanside police officers found a grenade this morning in the 400 block of North Tremont in Oceanside.

Officers arrived as the reporting party was carrying the ordnance out to them. Recognizing the item to possibly be a live piece of military ordnance, the officers told him to put it down and walk away from it.

Officers then cordoned off the area and began to evacuate. They evacuated an area roughly 300 feet in all directions from the ordnance. The Sheriff’s Explosive Ordnance Division collected the item, which turned out to be a 40 mm grenade normally fired from an M19 launcher. When detonated, it has an effective kill radius of two to three meters.

It is not known at this time if the device is live or inert. The evacuation order was lifted early afternoon.

Sheriff’s Explosive Ordnance Division is investigating.
