VISTA—A Vista woman was hospitalized early Wednesday morning after her husband assaulted her with a deadly weapon while she was sleeping.

Deputies say the incident took place at a Vista residence on Primerose Avenue. Upon arrival, they discovered an adult female victim who had been beaten about the head and facial area while she was sleeping. The suspect, later identified as 40 year-old Octavio Savalza, had beaten his wife with both his fists and a five pound dumbbell that was picked up by Savalza. Several children also witnessed this incident. Savalza fled the scene. The victim was transported and admitted to Palomar hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Savalza was arrested in San Marcos at about 5 a.m. He was booked at the Vista Detention Facility for attempted murder, felony spousal abuse and felony child endangerment.
