CARLSBAD–The driver of a vehicle that crashed into a tree early this morning was airlifted to a hospital, Carlsbad police said today.

The 5:05 a.m. solo vehicle traffic collision occurred on Aviara Parkway east of Cormorant Drive.

Officers say the vehicle was driving eastbound on Aviara Parkway and collided with trees located in the center median of the roadway. The vehicle proceeded into the westbound lanes where it stopped and caught fire.

The driver, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, was able to exit the vehicle. The driver sustained major injuries and was flown by air ambulance to the UCSD Burn Center for treatment. Carlsbad Fire Department responded to the scene and extinguished the fire.

Traffic investigators are still at the scene investigating. Alcohol intoxication is suspected to be involved in the collision.

Aviara Parkway is closed in both directions between Cormorant Drive and Batiquitos Drive. The investigation and scene cleanup is expected to take a few hours. The roadway will be reopened as soon and the investigation and cleanup is completed.
