EL CAJON–In an ongoing effort to enhance the safety of our roadways, the El Cajon City Council gave their approval on October 14, 2014, to accept Federal Grant funding for the third portion of three major transportation grants received this year.
The State, through a competitive process, awarded El Cajon three separate grants from the Federal Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) in the total amount of $1,572,570.
The overall purpose of the grant program is to achieve a significant reduction in traffic collisions on all public roads through projects that improve roadway safety and traffic flow.
El Cajon’s project will upgrade of 26 traffic signals along Fletcher Parkway, Broadway, Marshall Avenue, Arnele Avenue, Johnson Avenue, Madison Avenue, and Magnolia Avenue. The scope of work involves the installation of approximately 50,000 lineal feet of traffic signal fiber-optic interconnect cable, installation of video detection cameras, and the installation of an adaptive traffic signal system to improve signal timing.
“The staff worked extremely hard to receive grant funds that will enable this community enhancing project to occur,” said Mayor Bill Wells. “I am very proud that this City will be able to significantly improve the traffic and safety of El Cajon’s major roadways without using any local taxpayer dollars.”
The City was allocated $919,200 in grant funds for this project and no General Fund monies will be expended. The project is anticipated to begin in June 2015 and is expected to take approximately two months for completion.
