SAN DIEGO–District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis today announced the release of three innovative, mobile-friendly community outreach campaigns developed by the DA’s Youth Advisory Board. The mission of the Board is to educate the community about current issues affecting young people, spread awareness about the needs and challenges of youth, and create positive change throughout the community that leads to a reduction in crime. The Youth Advisory Board is made up of a diverse group of students from Lincoln High School, Mira Mesa High School and Scripps Ranch High School.
“The power of these outreach campaigns is that they are designed by youth, for youth,” said DA Dumanis. “The students who serve on our Youth Advisory Board have developed a creative, effective message that we hope will resonate with their peers and be a positive force in our schools.”
The new online campaigns were unveiled at Lincoln High School in Southeast San Diego and The Epicentre concert venue in Mira Mesa. DA Bonnie Dumanis, San Diego Unified School District Superintendent Cindy Marten, City Schools Chief of Police Rueben Littlejohn, and other law enforcement officials, youth-serving organizations, faith leaders, students, parents and local community members attended the premier.
Lincoln High School’s Respect and Responsibility: Give it, Get it campaign captures responses from students and community members using a kinetic typography video to illustrate the importance of respect for self, others, community, and the world at large.
Mira Mesa High School’s The Fight campaign highlights diversity and unity in the human struggle. A newly-created mobile webpage shares the struggles students face every day and lets others know they are not alone, inspiring them to overcome their challenges.
Scripps Ranch High School’s Redefine Success campaign encourages students to realize there are different paths to success for everyone and the most important achievement is happiness with oneself. The mobile app was designed by the students.
The Youth Advisory Board was created in 2008 as partnership between the DA’s Office and local high school students. With adult support and guidance, students have produced impactful campaigns that have earned a regional Emmy Award and Diversity Youth Leadership Award from the City of San Diego Human Relations Commission.
Youth Advisory Board members will be taking their messages countywide, visiting classrooms and youth-serving organizations to share their campaigns and connect youth with resources to help them succeed.
