SAN DIEGO–Valhalla High School student Shea Ricketts has been named recipient of the 11th annual AMN/HCC San Diego Scholarship Essay Contest presented by Health Care Communicators (HCC) of San Diego County and AMN Healthcare.
Born and raised in San Diego, Shea, 17, grew up around healthcare, closely following her father as he made his rounds as a local physician. Even at a young age, she found special joy in connecting with and helping patients. In 2005, her father unexpectedly passed away. It is the memory of Shea’s time with her father and his patients that has inspired her to pursue a career in the medical field. She plans to attend the University of San Diego this fall, majoring in either behavioral neuroscience or biology, and says she hopes to attend medical school to fulfill her dream of working with, and providing healthcare to, people in need.
Carol Johnson, Vice President, Sourcing & Digital Marketing at AMN Healthcare, proudly presented the scholarship to Shea before a roomful of communicators at the HCC Finest Awards Gala held April 10 at the new San Diego Central Library. Made possible through a partnership between AMN and HCC, the scholarship has been awarded since 2003 to the high school or college student who best exemplifies excellence in pursuit of a healthcare career.
“The application essays we received this year were amazing,” said Johnson. “But Shea’s story really struck a chord with the judges. She knew what she wanted to do from a very young age—her father’s medical legacy has been a driving force throughout her life. I have no doubt she will make a positive impact in healthcare.”
