LAKESIDE–Investigators are searching for leads in the death of a Lakeside man, a Sheriff’s spokesman says.

On April 3, at 1:45 p.m., deputies responded to 12568 Lakeshore Drive in the community of Lakeside for a report of a person down behind the business.  When they arrived on scene they found a man sitting on the ground unresponsive.

The man had blood on his face and chest. The deputies performed CPR on the man until relieved by paramedics. Despite their resuscitation efforts the man was pronounced dead at the scene. The witness who initially reported the man down said there was a pistol in the man’s lap. While the witness was on the phone with the 911 dispatcher, another man walked up to the man on the ground and picked up the pistol. The man cleared the round from the chamber of the pistol and put the gun in his pocket before walking away. This information was relayed to the dispatcher prompting a search of the area for the man with the gun. El Capitan High School was placed in lockdown as a precaution. The lockdown was lifted at about 3:25 p.m. The firearm was located under a bush a short distance from where the man was found on the ground.

The Sheriff’s Homicide Detail, Crime Laboratory personnel, and detectives from the Santee Sheriff’s Station are conducting an investigation. The identity of the victim as well as the cause and manner of death will be determined by the Medical Examiner’s Office.
