William D. Cannon Art Gallery to display portraits of jazz artists

CARLSBAD–The City of Carlsbad’s William D. Cannon Art Gallery presents “Portraits from the Golden Age of Jazz: Photographs by William P. Gottlieb (1917-2006),” an exhibition of 71 photographs of the great jazz artists of the 1930s and 1940s.

Gottlieb photographed the jazz scene of those eras to illustrate his columns in The Washington Post and Down Beat Magazine; his images have become standard icons of jazz history. The exhibition celebrates the 25th anniversary of the TGIF Jazz in the Parks summer concert series and includes several special events and a selection of photographs from TGIF performances displayed with “Portraits from the Golden Age of Jazz.”

The exhibition opens July 11 and continues through August 29 at the William D. Cannon Art Gallery in the Carlsbad City Library complex, 1775 Dove Lane at El Camino Real in Carlsbad.
